Iowa (8-4) is looking to break a two game bowl losing streak. This is the third Outback Bowl appearance for the Hawkeyes (2004, 2006).
Key Info– The University of Iowa is located in the former state capital of Iowa City. Founded in 1847 Iowa has just over 30,000 students.
Key Random Alumni Member– Actor and two-time Oscar nominee Gene Wilder. Random enough?
Key Point of the Season – The key game for Iowa this year was the huge upset of highly ranked Penn State at Kinnick Stadium. Had Iowa lost that game they would’ve had a 5-5 record. Daniel Murray’s game winning kick propelled Iowa to a strong finish and a New Year’s Day bowl game.
Key Player – Is there any question? It’s Shonn Greene. The running back-turned furniture mover-turned running back won the Doak Walker Award as the nation’s best back. He set the school single season rushing mark with 1,729 yards and scored 17 touchdowns.
Keys to a victory in Australia the Outback – If Iowa plays as it has near the end of the regular season they should be in good shape.
While the offense got a lot of attention for the 55 points scored in the finale versus Minnesota, the defense pitched a shutout. Shutting down Steve Spurrier’s offense is never easy, he’s always got something tucked under that visor.
Offensively Ricky Stanzi needs to continue making good decisions. Remember those early season turnovers? He’s been playing well (with much more playing experience of course) and hasn’t been making critical mistakes. Wise decisions in the passing game, and the offensive line clearing the way for Shonn Greene to do his thing, should allow Iowa to continue putting plenty of points on the board.
